Leadership strategy games

Whether you teach 10-year-olds or 50-year-olds, one way to teach leadership principles is to use games. Each game teaches a lesson about leadership in a way that classroom or seminar learning cannot. Games help program the principles into your body, and they can help an entire group learn the importance of leadership.

    • For this game, you will need enough blindfolds for half of your group. Divide your group into two teams and have one leave the room. Set up a few safe and simple items in your room, such as coins, paper clips or a box of tissues. The group without blindfolds is instructed to take one of the blindfolded participants by the hand and lead her into the room to identify two of the objects. Variations of the game include not speaking and using only noises for the group without blindfolds. This will help teach that leaders always have a bigger picture and must lead their team safely.

    • Form your group into a circle and have each player reach into the center with one arm. Have each person grab the hand of another player and then do the same with their other arm and a different player. The group then must attempt to untie themselves and form the circle without unlinking their hands. This requires each participant to be an active part of the team and to take initiative to improve the condition of the knot.

    • Split your group into groups of five to 10 people each. Choose one member of each group as the facilitator or leader. Whisper a shape in the facilitator’s ear. This person must get his group to form the shape without speaking or pulling people into place. He can only touch or gesture. This requires the leader to involve every person on his team and to see which people have certain strengths and weaknesses.

    • Have your whole group get into a circle standing around you. Tell the group that you will be doing an activity in the center. Once you start doing this activity, the rest of the group mimics what you are doing. After 30 seconds, a student from the circle must come and ask what you are doing. Tell him you are doing something completely different. For example, if you appear to be shoveling snow, tell him you are eating chicken. At that time, the person who asked you what you were doing starts miming chicken eating while the rest of the group follows. The game continues until you decide to end it. The game requires people to initiate on both the outside and inside of the circle. It gives the person in the center the feeling of confidence when the rest of the circle follows his leading action.

    • Have your group stand in a circle with arms around each other and your heads down. Group members can look at a point in the middle of the circle if they wish, but they cannot look at each other. Tell them that they must count to a certain number, such as 20. If two people say a number at the same time, they must start over. This game helps your group communicate non-verbally and to feel like one unit. As the game progresses, the group is unconsciously synchronizing, forming what improvisers call “group mind.” ßy understanding what this concept feels like, a future leader will understand what it feels like when his team needs to come together more on a project or task.
